- ‘Dwell on uneasy feelings’
This seemed to be a deep lesson in how to move forward and instigate change. In the midst of so much that needs to be changed, this feels important to remember.

Whiteliness: Institutional Racism
- Student talking about shame that non-white culture was so savage and uncultivated
I remember this kind of feeling at school and then by the time I reached university, I felt that although I didn’t see many examples of it, it was still out there. When I graduated, I found it and I was right.
When I teach now, I want students of colour to feel pride over work produced by people just like them and for all students to feel that there is no fixed type of person who creates art and design.
UCL, Why is my curriculum so white?
- Photos of Black Academics
As an academic of colour, I found this really moving to see. You often feel that everyone is looking at you and thinking that you are there because of tokenism rather than your knowledge, skills and experience. I deal with it by doing the best job I can so I know that I deserve the position I’m in. But even though you’re ignoring and not engaging with the opinions of others, the pressure of it is still there and that can feel lonely. I felt great pride in seeing these photos and thought if they can do it I can do it. This is one of the reasons why students of colour need to see themselves in art and design world.
