When working out how to impact my practice I returned to my original question and sub-questions to develop a way to continue the ‘zig-zag process of continual review and re-adjustment’. (McNiff, 2022)
Can I meet with my colleagues with greater intention?
Can I understand what goes on when we meet?
Yes, I have increased my understanding over the course of project, through analysing experience, reading and articulating findings.
Can I develop a position or values related to meeting?
I’ve going to adapt the findings to create my first set of values. Then I will create a Value Action Plan inspired by value exercises proposed by Brene Brown. (2018, p.190) In this, I will identify behaviours that will support the values. In this I’m moving back to the start of the action research cycle which ‘begins with values’ (McNiff, 2022)
Can I change my meeting practice for the better?
I have begun to do this through holding an initial Discussion of my findings with colleagues, in line with action research’s aim to have an ‘influence on the people you work with’. (McNiff, 2022) Even more than the specific points raised, the conversation led the people involved to consider their actions, ask further questions and reflect on wider department culture. Further discussions would be positive. In the future, it would be great to build on the action research project with material from these discussions and create an ongoing Resource. This type of document would be invaluable in introductions, inductions and training with new staff. It could also complement other ongoing professional development like teaching observations.
