- Choosing experience-based and arts-based methods
My use of these methods fits into a larger context where research has increasingly been becoming more ‘sensory and embodied.’ (Pink, 2015, p.1276 cited in Brown and Collins, 2021) A change has occurred in what is considered data (Brown and Collins, 2021, p.1275), the idea that some methods are more legitimate and scientific than others (Rorty, 1982, p.195 cited in Bochner, 2018) and what the overall aims of research should be. Practitioners whose aims resonate with mine want to create work that ‘seeks conversation, encounter, and the fullness of an emotional and subjective life shared with others’ (Bochner, 2018), to ‘wrestle with ambiguities and contradictions not resolve or exhaust them’ and create ‘stories that can change the world.’(Denzin, 2019, p,722)
