Belonging

Belonging – what we belong to – Different groups

Maybe in thinking about student journey this what we need to be more specific about – what we want them to belong to and what we don’t?

On our course:

We want students to feel they belong to Illustration (community of practice)

BUT

We need to acknowledge that they have come from and are currently participants in different communities, social and otherwise.

AND

We need to make it clear to students that the course community is not something they join but that is actively constructed by all participants.

Connects to Brene Brown quote/idea:

‘Belonging is not the same as fitting in’

Maybe we have sometimes helped people to fit in, not to belong.

Maybe it is important to say what belonging is and what belonging isn’t?

Isn’t safety (Bell Hooks)

Is – home, place, family

In light of the ideas out forward in The Undercommons, and structures needing to be torn down, perhaps community is the things to invest in and make sure you protect? It is the part where the learning is contained and that will sustain into the beyond ‘the break.’ (Harney, Moten, pg 6)

‘No joy in the act …and loses entirely all sense of joy in the process.’

Joy, Humour – Essential elements of practice that need to be protected and sustained.

Threats, who or what do we keep safe
